Detroit Shopping

It makes sense that America’s Motor City should have miles of parking for mall-to-mall motoring. For starters, Greater Detroit has a couple dozen malls to warrant frequent fill-ups, with no signs that developers are putting on brakes. Dearborn’s Fairlane Town Center, surrounded by freeways and bringing to mind the popular Ford model, is anchored by Lord & Taylor and Marshall Fields. Harking back to Gone With The Wind’s classic picnic, Novi’s Twelve Oaks Mall, has 180 stores including Lord & Taylor, Marshall Fields, JCPenney and Sears. It’s always Christmas at Lake Orion’s 21-acre Olde World Canterbury Village, featuring more than 18 holiday specialty shops. Ann Arbor’s Briarwood Mall showcases apparel and home décor powerhouses like Ann Taylor, Coldwater Creek, Pottery Barn, Chico’s, Williams-Sonoma and 130 other stores. Harper Woods’ Eastland Center, anchored by Marshall Field’s, also has a Lowe’s and Target. Auburn Hills’ Great Lakes Crossing, with more than 200 stores, boasts six themed areas and Michigan “firsts” including Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, GameWorks, Rainforest Café, and Neiman Marcus Last Call Clearance Center. Livonia’s Laurel Park Place, anchored by Parisian, Von Maur, has more than 70 other shops, and the Livonia Mall, anchored by Value City, Mervyn’s and Sears, also brims with 70 or so shops and boutiques. Troy’s Somerset Collection, anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Marshall Fields, also features Tiffany’s, Crate & Barrel and a concierge desk.

Other Greater Detroit malls include Sterling Heights’ Lakeside Mall; Roseville’s Macomb Mall; Southfield’s Northland Center; Troy’s Oakland Mall; West Bloomfield’s Orchard Mall; Detroit’s Riverfront Shops; Taylor’s Southland Center; Howell’s Tanger Outlet Center; Southfield’s Tel-Twelve Mall, Warren’s Universal Mall, Rochester Hills’ Village of Rochester Hills, and Westland’s Westland Center. Mall allure aside, it’s possible to shop for a GMAC Mortgage at Riverfront Shops at the GM Renaissance Center – aka RenCen – also filled with diverse retailers and restaurants from Brooks Brothers and Waldenbooks to That Sandwich Place, Maui! Wow! and Zoup.
